Bug Free Home Tip – Fayetteville Georgia Termite and Pest Control / Ennis Exterminating

Have you ever stepped in a sloppy, muddy pit when walking around your home?  Where were you when it happened?  Hopefully it wasn’t near your septic tank drain field!

Watch this short video to see a common muddy area around YOUR home that is an oasis for bugs and other pests.

Air conditioning condensation lines are common areas for excess moisture around the foundation of your house.  Not only will this create a tiny ecosystem oasis where bugs and pests can thrive during periods of extreme drought, but it can also create a WEAK SPOT in your termite protection if your home is protected by a liquid barrier termite treatment or make your home even more susceptible to termite infestation and damage if you have no termite protection at all.

May I just say that no termite protection at all . . . in Georgia and most of the southeastern United States . . . is a bad idea to begin with.

Now that we got that out of the way, if you:

  • Don’t have termite protection at all
  • Don’t remember the last time your home was inspected for termite damage
  • Have a problem with BUGS or other pests inside your home and need some help, OR . . .
  • Maybe you have a simple question about some other kind of bug or pest . . .

Call Ennis Exterminating at 770-716-0867 and ask for me, Glenn Laney. I’ll be happy to speak with you any time!

Valuable Tip for Fewer Bugs Around YOUR Home!! – Fayetteville Georgia Termite and Pest Control / Ennis Exterminating, Inc.

Hi Folks,

In the famous words of Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, you have heard it said:

“If you build it, they will come . . . “

Just as important as doing what ATTRACTS the things you want around your home is GETTING RID of what attract the things you don’t want around your home.

This new series of videos will highlight many of the SIMPLE of things you can eliminate around YOUR home that make bugs and other pests happy.  For crying out loud, LET THEM BE HAPPY SOMEWHERE ELSE!!  Roll up that red carpet and hang out the “Not Welcome” sign to bugs and pests in your home and yard.

Watch this quick video to see one of the MOST common conditions we see around homes that creates an oasis for bugs and pests . . . and can make your home susceptible to termites or even WEAKEN termite protection you invest your hard earned money in to keep your home termite-free!

For $2 – $3 you can get all the hardware you need to extend your A/C condensation line away from your house and keep it from dripping right on your foundation.  Not only does this excess moisture create an area for bugs and pests (like ants, roaches, centipedes, mice, rats and mosquitoes) to rehydrate, but it can also flood termite bait stations in the immediate area or weaken a liquid termite barrier around your foundation.

We suggest getting the condensation lines as far away from your house as possible without interfering with your lawn mower, walkways or other high traffic areas.

If you have a problem with BUGS or other pests inside your home and need some help . . . OR maybe you have a simple question about some other kind of bug or pest . . . call Ennis Exterminating at 770-716-0867 and ask for me, Glenn Laney. I’ll be happy to speak with you any time!

Clean Your Gutters to Get Rid of ANTS & CENTIPEDES!!! – Termite & Pest Control – Fayetteville, GA

When was the last time you cleaned your gutters . . . or had them cleaned?  Last week, last month . . . LAST YEAR???  I tell people all the time how important it is to clean their gutters to reduce the moisture in and around their home, especially in times of drought like we’ve had in the last few months here in Fayetteville, Georgia.  (Gutter cleaning is important for lots of other reasons, also . . . including termites).

WELL, I guess I need to practice what I preach.  Watch this video to see what I found in MY gutters when I was up there this weekend cleaning them out before the next thunderstorm.

That’s a whole lot of ANTS!  After I put the camera down and continued cleaning the gutters, I actually found some happy centipedes crawling around in there, too.  Luckily I caught them and got rid of them BEFORE they got into my house, but that isn’t always the case.

Most of the time if ants have just gotten into the house, finding the trail and nesting site OUTSIDE is the quickest way to get rid of them.  THE PROBLEM IS, too often the home-owner fights the good fight against ants from the inside of the home only for such a long time, the ants get so comfortable they actually begin to NEST inside YOUR home.  Once the population has gotten to that point, its usually too late for a homeowner to get rid of them without professional help.

If you have a problem with ANTS or centipedes inside your home and need some help . . . OR maybe you have a simple question about some other kind of bug or pest . . . call Ennis Exterminating at 770-716-0867 and ask for me, Glenn Laney. I’ll be happy to speak with you any time!

Could YOU Be Bringing in More Than You Bargain For On Your Firewood? – Fayetteville Georgia Termite and Pest Control, Ennis Exterminating

Is it possible that you are bringing in more than you planned on when you picked that damp firewood off the ground outside and carried it into your garage or basement?  Its June right now, and the temperatures in our area are high 90s, so thinking about firewood is not really on a lot of people’s radar.  The fact is, many people actually bring firewood into their garage or basement at this time of year to dry out in preparation for cold weather, when sitting under a cozy blanket next to the calming flashes of warm fireplace is appealing again.  I know I enjoy the warm glow of a fire when the time of year is right.

Strange things can happen when you bring firewood inside!  Watch this short video to see what happened in THIS home when they brought firewood into their garage.

I am guilty, too!  I bring firewood into my house on a daily basis during winter because I heat my house primarily with a wood burning stove, AFTER thoroughly inspecting my firewood (especially for termites).  Bringing firewood in isn’t the problem, but storing firewood inside can be a BIG problem.  Firewood can have stink bugs, ants, roaches, spiders, beetles and even YELLOW JACKETS, hunkered down under the bark for a sheltered place to over-winter until warmer weather returns.  Yellow jackets are actually the biggest problem I personally have in my home with firewood because they are hibernating in the wood pile, but will “wake up” when brought into the house and buzz around the house until they stop long enough for me to swat them.

To prepare your firewood to be dry when you need it, simply stack the wood OFF the ground and UNDER a tarp or other shelter, OUTSIDE!  I go to the nearest industrial center and get few pallets headed for the trash pile to stack my firewood on.  After proper storage, inspect each load for pests that will shake off onto your hearth BEFORE you bring it in, and go straight to the fire with the firewood instead of storing it inside.

Are those TERMITES Behind Those Boxes? – Fayetteville Georgia Termite and Pest Control

Here at Ennis Exterminating, we know that termites do more damage to homes in The United States than fires, floods, tornadoes and hurricanes combined.

FACT: NO HOME IS TERMITE PROOF unless it has been properly treated by a professional pest management company.  And, even then, there is a need for constant vigil.

What’s lurking behind the BOXES in your garage or basement?  There could be lots of things . . . and many of them are things you DON’T want in your home.

Watch this short video to see what I found behind these boxes in a local garage . . .

What does YOUR garage or basement look like?  If it looks like mine (and most garages and basements we see), you may have some boxes or other stuff stacked against walls that haven’t moved in years!  It may not be boxes, but instead pieces of furniture that NEVER get pulled away from the wall and inspected behind.

Mosquitoes and ZIKA Virus – What do YOU need to know? Fayetteville, GA – Ennis Exterminating, Inc.

Here at Ennis Exterminating, we LOVE being outdoors, and look forward to spring weather all winter long.  This is the time of year when it is so pleasant to be outside for both work and leisure.

Imagine this . . . you’ve invited friends over to enjoy some thick, juicy, delicious steaks, you have some fresh vegetables ready to roast on the grill, a big pitcher of sweet tea, maybe an apple cobbler in the Dutch oven to cook over hot coals at the fire pit . . .and don’t forget the fresh home-made batch of vanilla bean ice cream to top it all off.  You are finally able to enjoy sitting outdoors now that the evening weather is perfect and our lovely Georgia pollen season has finished so you can hose that last layer of yellow off your patio furniture.

Those days are just around the corner, EXCEPT for one problem . . . MOSQUITOES!!!  Mosquito season in Fayetteville, Senoia, Peachtree City, Brooks, Tyrone and pretty much the rest of Georgia is right around the corner.

There are two big things to think about regarding Mosquitoes in YOUR yard . . . Comfort and the possibility of illness, including Zika Virus

Comfort – Is it possible to enjoy your yard without mosquitoes biting you every time you go outside?  YES!  You can get a head start on mosquitoes by eliminating the following sources of standing water to reduce breeding sites around your home:

  • Bird baths – pour out and change water weekly
  • Clogged Gutters – get rid of leaf debris that keep them from draining properly.
  • Kids Toys – these don’t seem obvious, but plastic kid’s toys can hold LOTS of water and breed THOUSANDS of mosquitoes.
  • Tarps – While they’re meant to protect things from water, folds in tarps can hold enough water to breed multitudes of mosquitoes.
  • Any other container that holds standing water should be dumped, including: trash cans, flower pot drip trays, buckets, wheel barrows, old tires (just get rid of them) and even large pet watering bowls that take too long for Fluffy to drink.

Removing breeding sites won’t completely rid your yard of mosquitoes, but can make a difference.

Zika Virus – Unless you’ve been living under a rock . . . you’ve heard about the Zika Virus and probably have some questions.  Are we at risk in Georgia of a major Zika Virus outbreak?  Probably not, but read below to find out what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is saying about the disease.

This is what the CDC is saying about documented cases of Zika Virus in the United States:

  • No local mosquito-borne Zika virus disease cases have been reported in US states, but there have been travel-associated cases.
  • With the recent outbreaks, the number of Zika cases among travelers visiting or returning to the United States will likely increase.
  • 80% of cases will not be diagnosed.
  • These imported cases could result in local spread of the virus in some areas of the United States.

This is what the CDC KNOWS about the Zika Virus:

  • Zika can be spread from a pregnant woman to her baby during pregnancy.
  • Infection during pregnancies is linked to birth defects in babies.
  • Zika is spread mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. These mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters. They can also bite at night.
  • Zika is not currently found in the continental US. The mosquitoes that can carry Zika are found in some areas of the US.
  • Because the mosquitoes that spread Zika virus are found throughout the tropics, outbreaks will likely continue.
  • There is no vaccine or medicine for Zika.

This is what the CDC DOESN’T KNOW about the Zika Virus:

  • If there’s a safe time during your pregnancy to travel to an area with Zika.
  • If you do travel and are bitten: 1) How likely you are to get Zika AND 2) How likely it is that your baby will have birth defects from the infection.

THE BOTTOM LINE:  You can enjoy your lawn with greater comfort AND you need to be careful about mosquito bites.  Based on what is known right now, the likelihood of a major outbreak of Zika Virus in Georgia is low and the fear factor should be low also.  Remember, mosquitoes causing illness is nothing new even though the Zika Virus is news to us this year.

If you’ve got a problem with mosquitoes in your yard and want to discuss a mosquito reduction plan…or maybe you simply have a question about mosquitoes or another type of household pest…call Ennis Exterminating at 770-716-0867 and ask for me, Glenn Laney. I’ll be happy to speak with you any time!
