CHAMPAIGN — There were two major pieces of news that came out of Illinois' football program on Monday afternoon, and they were both positive developments. The first came for a player who is expected to be one of the best at his position in college football while the other concerns a new member of the program hoping to help the Illini take another step in 2023. According to the school, it's the first time in program history that a player has landed on that list and adds to junior's growing list of preseason accolades after a breakthrough 2022 season. After netting 14 tackles for loss and 5 1/2 sacks in 13 games last fall and earning second-team All-American honors, Newton is on a number of preseason first teams along with the watch lists for the Bednarik, Lombardi, Nagurski, and Walter Camp Player of Year Awards.(Photo by...Bidens travel to Maui to meet with wildfire survivors and first responders

(NEXSTAR) – The summer COVID surge isn't over. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported hospitalizations jumped another 21.6% last week, and deaths rose by more than 8%.While the CDC doesn't track the number of people testing positive anymore, the weeks of rising hospitalizations show people are still getting seriously ill with the virus more than three years into the public health battle against it. However, an updated booster could still be a month or two away from being released. The last update to the vaccine's formula was last year when the "bivalent" shot was released. It was designed to target the highly contagious omicron variant of COVID, which is still the dominant variant to this day. But over the past year, omicron has spawned many subvariants, each with a name composed of letters and numbers. The most common right now, according to CDC tracking, are EG.5 and several types of XBB. Does the new bivalent COVID booster have different side effects? The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced this week that it has an agreement with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to use its national wireless emergency alert system for local alerts. This is the same system that shares AMBER alerts and other “time-sensitive” information during natural disasters or threats to public safety. The system allows MnDOT to now send alerts directly to mobile devices automatically. Other states, such as Pennsylvania, Georgia and Texas, have used these types of alerts for major road closure alerts. In addition, many local county sheriff’s offices already use these alerts.“The ability to send (these alerts) is an important additional tool for MnDOT to provide real-time information to the traveling public,” said Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger. “Road closures can occur suddenly, especially in cases of severe weather or major crashes on the highway system.”The new agreement will allow MnDOT to send alerts to people near ...It’s Halloween every day on Prime series about country’s scariest haunts
