Athletics sinking to new depths amid terrible start

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:17:30 GMT

Baseball’s new pitch timer finally met its match this week in the form of Oakland’s pitching staff. The Athletics walked 17 batters in a 17-6 loss to the New York Mets on Friday night. Time of game: 3 hours, 29 minutes — and it may have felt twice that long to anyone who stayed until the end. With the Mets in town, Oakland drew 11,102 for that contest, an improvement for a team that managed under 12,000 fans for an entire three-game series against Cleveland. It’s been a dreary start for the A’s at the box office, and the team’s performance on the field has been even worse than expected. After being swept by the Mets, the A’s have the worst record in the majors at 3-13. Their run differential of minus-63 is the worst in the sport, and the fourth-worst of the modern era in a team’s first 16 games.Oakland has been held to one run or fewer five times, and the A’s have allowed 11 runs or more six times. In three of their games, they did both.O...

A minor-league goalie carries Panthers into Boston matchup

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:17:30 GMT

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) — Alex Lyon started this season in the American Hockey League. He actually wasn’t even eligible for the opening two games of the season down there, since he had to first serve a suspension for excessively celebrating a championship in the minors last year. And now he may be the goalie the Florida Panthers will bet on to start the Stanley Cup playoffs — against the team that just posted the best regular season in NHL history, no less.Lyon is expected to be the starting goaltender Monday night when Florida visits Boston in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference first-round series. If it happens, it’ll be his NHL playoff debut.“I never thought I’d be in this situation,” Lyon said. That’s understandable, for so many reasons.Let’s start here: The 30-year-old Lyon went undrafted and is essentially a career minor-leaguer — with 227 games in the AHL, including playoffs, and only had 24 entering this season in the NHL. He set a slew of records in college at Yale, led Chicago ...

(CNN) — Just a few months after NASA introduced the world to the most powerful rocket ever flown to orbit, Elon Musk’s SpaceX is prepared to set off its own creation — which could pack nearly twice the power of anything flown before.SpaceX’s vehicle, called Starship, is currently sitting on a launch pad at the company’s facilities on the southern Texas coastline. The company is targeting liftoff at 8 a.m. CT (9 a.m. ET) on Monday, although it has the ability to take off anytime between 8 a.m. CT (9 a.m. ET) and 9:30 a.m. CT (10:30 a.m. ET).“I guess I’d like to just set expectations low,” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said during a Twitter “Spaces” event for his subscribers Sunday evening. “If we get far enough away from launch pad before something goes wrong, then I think I would consider that to be a success. Just don’t blow up the pad.”He added: “There’s a good chance that it gets postponed since ...

Cody Bellinger’s return to Dodger Stadium could not have played out much better. He received a pregame tribute and cheers Friday, robbed Jason Heyward of a home run Saturday and slugged a no-doubt homer Sunday as part of the Chicago Cubs’ series win against the Los Angeles Dodgers. His homer Sunday, the second of back-to-back home runs with Patrick Wisdom, stood as the winning run in a 3-2 victory.Bellinger’s 422-foot home run at 108.1 mph was his hardest-hit ball of any kind since 2020.“I had a lot of fun and I tried to enjoy every second of it,” Bellinger said. “You only come back for the first time one time. I really just wanted to soak in the moment and to have a fun time with the fans.”Although his second child is due any day, Bellinger said after the game he still planned to fly with the team Sunday night to Oakland.“We need to keep that (bun) in the oven and let that settle in while he’s rolling,” manager David Ross j...
