Dear Amy: I am troubled.I have been giving — really extending — the benefit of the doubt to “Jan,” my daughter-in-law, for some time.I see my son and Jan a couple of times a year, when I visit their city.I get a hotel room willingly and without question. I am friendly and supportive, I compliment her sincerely, and I find positive, non-controversial things to talk about. She just doesn’t seem to like me — or my visits — and it clearly hurts and upsets my son.She is openly impatient with him and absolutely cold to me.I can do nothing right. It would be nice if we could be friends, but if that’s too much I would be OK with being simply polite.I am bewildered and hurt for my son.I know that he is courteous and welcoming to her parents.I don’t know what I have done, if anything.Should I ask if I’ve offended her somehow?Related ArticlesAsk Amy | Ask Amy: Mom is worried about friend who wants more Ask Amy | Ask Amy: Friend want...Commission President advances global co-operation on carbon pricing in high-level event at COP28

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has hosted a high-level event at COP28 to promote the development of carbon pricing and carbon markets, as powerful instruments to reach the Paris Agreement objectives. It builds on the Call to Action for Paris-aligned Carbon Markets that the European Commission, Spain and France launched in June 2023.European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said:“Carbon pricing is thecentrepiece of the European Green Deal. In the European Union, if you pollute, you have to pay a price for that. If you want to avoid paying that price, you innovate and invest in clean technologies. And it works. Since 2005, the EU ETS has reduced emissions in the sectors covered by over 37%, and raised more than €175 billion. Many countries around the world now embrace carbon pricing, with 73 instruments in place, covering a quarter of total global emissions. This is a good start, but we must go further and faster. The EU is ready to share its experience and help ot...Marvelous midcentury gem in blossoming El Cerrito

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Nations climate conference on Friday began its final week with negotiators expected to zoom in on the future of fossil fuels on a dangerously warming planet.“It’s go-time for governments at COP28 this week,” U.N. Climate Chief Simon Stiell said at a press event Friday.Discussions after a first week of pageantry and official visits now become more difficult, particularly when it comes to language calling for the potential phase-out of the use of emission-spewing fossil fuels. Any language along those lines likely will draw the ire of Saudi Arabia, a major oil producer just next door to the United Arab Emirates. The UAE itself also is planning to boost its oil production from 4 million to 5 million barrels of crude oil a day to take advantage of the fossil fuel market before countries potentially shift away from its use.Stiell underlined the challenge ahead if the world doesn’t limit emissions, describing ice shelves melting causing ...Putin to seek another presidential term in Russia, extending his rule of over two decades, state media say
