Outdoor recreation in Colorado, nationwide packs economic punch, federal numbers show

The outdoor recreation industry accounted for 2.2% of the nation’s GDP at $563.7 billion in 2022 and made up 2.8% of Colorado’s GDP at nearly $14 billion. The latest federal numbers on the industry also show that Colorado’s outdoor economy grew by 19.9% last year, the sixth largest increase nationwide. For the first time since the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis has released data on outdoor recreation, the industry’s sales crossed the $1 trillion mark.“This is a historic day for the outdoor economy,” Chris Perkins, vice president of programs at the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable, said in a Nov. 17 news conference.Perkins said ORR, a national coalition that represents more than 110,000 outdoor businesses, had a sense from members’ reports and anecdotes that 2022 was a good year. The federal numbers released last week confirm that, he said. The recreation covered by the economic review includes bicycling, boating, hiking, fishing, hunting and sno...Broncos considering all options at safety following Kareem Jackson’s suspension

Denver safety Kareem Jackson is suspended for four games. And whether Jackson’s hit on Vikings quarterback Josh Dobbs in Week 11 was worthy of the punishment or not, no longer matters.Nor does it hide the fact that his absence puts the Broncos in a difficult position in the middle of the playoff hunt.Outside of Justin Simmons, the Broncos’ depth at safety is thin. P.J. Locke has been dealing with an ankle injury, Delarrin Turner-Yell has struggled whenever he’s been thrown into the secondary and rookie JL Skinner has yet to play a defensive snap.Despite that reality, head coach Sean Payton insists the solution is in the building.“We’ll rep a few different players there,” Payton said. “We’ll see where we’re at health-wise.”Ideally, the Broncos would like to have Locke back on the field. Locke suffered an ankle injury against the Buffalo Bills, causing him to miss last Sunday’s win over the Minnesota Vikings. His status for Denver’s Week 12 matchup against Clev...Resurrection Christian’s Ryan and Ty Yoder share basketball passion

Ty Yoder’s basketball roots can be traced back to Indiana, the home of Larry Bird, “Hoosiers” and hoops madness. His father, Ryan Yoder, was a star at Westview High School in Topeka, Ind., and then played college ball at Colorado State. Ryan, a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2015 Silver Anniversary Team, is now Ty’s head coach.Ty’s uncle, Russell “Rusty” Yonder, also starred at Westview before playing at South Alabama. No wonder Ty feels he has a destiny to fulfill as the junior point guard for Resurrection Christian High School in Loveland. The Cougars entered last season as the top-ranked team in Class 4A but lost to 17th-seeded Holy Family, 53-43, in the championship game. The loss lingers.“We have the feeling that we let ourselves down,” Ty said.Senior center Jacob Barker, who’s committed to Metro State, was more blunt.“We have a little bit of a chip on our shoulders, so to speak, knowing we sh...Michael Malone reflects on Nuggets tenure after receiving extension: “The guy doesn’t want to lose”

ORLANDO, Fla. — Open gym environments in the weeks after the Nuggets’ first NBA championship often involved an energetic 51-year-old man, as one veteran player remembers it.“His work ethic stood out,” said Reggie Jackson, a newcomer during 2022-23 who was still getting acquainted with Michael Malone’s personality and coaching style as the offseason began. “Being the head coach of a team that won the championship and being back in the gym immediately, not only just watching guys but actually rebounding and passing, defending.”Malone’s contract extension as head coach of the Denver Nuggets was officially announced Tuesday, while the team was in the middle of a five-game road trip that has required a great deal of film work by Malone and the coaching staff. The Nuggets (10-5) are 3-5 on the road this season going into the final game of the trip Friday at Houston.“Obviously, just have to give so many thanks to Stan and Josh Kroenke, ...Letters: Unemployed Coloradans’ suffering is prolonged by state

Unemployed Coloradans’ suffering is prolonged by stateSince I applied for unemployment on June 1, I have been waiting on hold for the equivalent of more than 11 days and still haven’t received a payment or any idea when a payment will be made. If you think this is an isolated incident, think again. I was told by staff at the Colorado Department of Labor (CDL) unemployment office that nearly 6,000 claimants are experiencing a program integrity hold. We must demand that the unemployment system in Colorado be brought into the modern age, and fix a process that isn’t working effectively or efficiently. One of the most stressful events in our adult lives includes being unemployed and faced with financial uncertainty. The CDL fraud detection tools have the unintended consequences of preventing thousands of legitimate claims from being paid. For some, they’re locked out of even being able to file a claim. For others, reaching a human to talk about the situation is next to impossible.E...Opinion: National parks are more than scenic − they’re sacred. But at what cost to Native Americans?

Abraham Lincoln has an almost saintly place in U.S. history: the “Great Emancipator” whose leadership during the Civil War preserved the Union and abolished slavery.Often overlooked among his achievements is legislation he signed June 30, 1864, during the thick of the war – but only marginally related to the conflict. The Yosemite Valley Grant Act preserved the Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove in California as a park “held for public use, resort, and recreation … for all time.”It was the first time the federal government had set aside land for its scenic value, and it created a model for U.S. national parks, which are themselves hallowed sites in American culture. Originally granted to the state of California, Yosemite formally became the third U.S. national park in 1890, joining a system of picturesque lands that hold spiritual and patriotic significance for millions of Americans. At the same time, however, the establishment of national parks had severe consequences for Native Ame...Editorial: Stories abound of Coloradans’ spirit of generosity. SEATTLE – So it begins, an 18-day stretch that will go a long way in deciding the 49ers’ playoff fortunes. After a Thanksgiving Night visit to the Seahawks, the 49ers will head to the NFC-leading Philadelphia Eagles, then return home for a Dec. 10 rematch with the Seahawks, to say nothing of a possible Super Bowl preview on Christmas night against the Baltimore Ravens.“Everyone can look at the schedule and see we’ve got four or five games that are going to be against really good competition and definitely tough games to play,” left tackle Trent Williams said. “That’s not going anywhere, so the best you can do is focus on going 1-0 every week.”’This week began with a Sunday win at home over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Four days later, the 49ers (7-3) are looking to keep the Seahawks (6-4) out of the NFC West perch.Last year, the 49ers successfully bounced from a Sunday win over the Bucs to a Thursday night win at the Seahawks.“It’s a divisional game against an opponent that’s always giv...San Jose spent big bucks on Covid parklets–but some businesses can’t afford to make them permanent

It’s a Thursday morning in San Jose’s SOFA neighborhood, and restaurant pop-up owner Brandon Salmon has served one of his very last Covid-era breakfast sandwiches. The pop-up space is located in a parklet on South Second Street that was installed during the pandemic. But with San Jose — like most cities around the Bay Area — phasing out free parklet space for businesses, this one will soon be a relic of a time when masks and social distancing were part of our regular lexicon.“These things have created hubs for the community,” Salmon, 29, said glumly. “People rely on these places to go. It just really bums me out.”Over the last year, San Jose has started requiring business owners with pandemic-era parklet spaces to either pay up to keep their spot permanent or say goodbye to what some see as a vital asset that boosts local business and encourages people to walk in a city known for its car-centric character.Salmon’s pop-up HashnDash...Single family residence in Palo Alto sells for $2.9 million
