Barriers facing vulnerable people trying to stay cool As the GTA sweated through another day of extreme heat and sweltering conditions, the city’s Heat Relief Network was once again available to provide relief to residents. The city’s current heat relief strategy provides more than 500 spaces for cooling off, including libraries, civic centres, indoor and outdoor pools, splash pads and malls. Previously when heat warnings were issued, a handful of temporary cooling centres were also opened.Despite an increase in the number of cooling locations now, there is concern the city is sending unhoused people where they are not welcome.“I’ve had people where they have been, not necessarily where they’ve had police arrest them, but they’ve been chased out of using things like a splash pad, for example,” says Diana Chan McNally, the harm reduction case manager at All Saints Toronto. “If you see a grown adult or unhoused person at a children’s splash pad, that’s going to set off alarm bells. So it’s obviou...

Justice Department releases slightly less redacted Trump warrant affidavit (The Hill) - The Justice Department (DOJ) on Wednesday released a slightly less redacted version of the affidavit that convinced a judge to approve a search warrant of Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate last year. This follows a ruling from Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart earlier in the day that ordered that more information from the affidavit be made public, while denying a request from several news organizations to have the entire document unsealed.Reinhart said in his ruling that the DOJ agreed to have some additional parts of the affidavit be made public, but also asked for other parts to remain sealed “to comply with grand jury secrecy rules and to protect investigative sources and methods.”He found that the DOJ had "met its burden of showing that its proposed redactions of the affidavit are narrowly tailored to serve the Government's legitimate interests and are the least onerous alternative to sealing the entire search warrant affidavit."Reinhart stayed the order until July 13 to give ...

Pro-Trump lawyer Lin Wood gives up his law license By Marshall Cohen and Katelyn Polantz | CNNLin Wood, a prominent right-wing attorney and election denier, has given up his law license in an apparent move to stave off disciplinary proceedings tied to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.Wood is formally retiring from practicing law, and the disciplinary cases against him in Georgia are being dismissed, according to court filings and a letter Wood sent to the state bar this week. His retirement is “unqualified, irrevocable, and permanent,” the court filings state.“I have retired from the active practice of law as I have been planning to do since late 2019,” Wood told CNN.The situation stems from Wood’s conduct after the 2020 election. He filed a series of meritless lawsuits after then-President Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, which were filled with debunked theories about massive voter fraud that went nowhere in the courts. He was never formally part of the Trump campaign’s legal team, though he promoted the same election...
