NCAA softball: As long as Gophers have pitching ace Autumn Pease, they know they have a chance

Gophers pitching ace Autumn Pease is always quick to credit her teammates. Asked earlier this week about being named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, following in footsteps of program legends Sara Groenwegen and Amber Fiser before her, Pease immediately mentioned the defense behind her.The only issue with that assessment from Pease? She tends to make life pretty easy for everyone else around her.“I joke around that when I play behind here in center field I’m like, ‘Good pitch Autumn,’ ” centerfielder Natalie DenHartog said. “Then I’ll take another step and I’m like, ‘OK, good job. I’ve got it if they hit it to me.’ ”“It’s honestly amazing,” catcher Taylor Krapf said. “She just makes the hitters look silly when she’s on her game. She’s so confident in herself. It’s cool to catch someone who has as much confidence as she does.”That confidence is something the Gophers sof...Minnesota Aurora looks to build on wildly successful debut season

After one year, the “Aurora Way” has essentially become an avenue of excellence.Minnesota Aurora FC, the amateur women’s soccer club in Eagan, had huge responses in the amount of community ownership and fund raising to soar off the ground in 2022. Attendance for matches topped some professional women’s clubs, while on the field, the new team had a near-perfect season.Nicole Lukic, the club’s second-year head coach and sporting director, defined the “Aurora Way” in a soccer sense.“Very attacking-minded, fun, we want to score as many goals as possible,” Lukic said during the club’s media day in early May. “… We might give up a few goals here and there, but we’re confident that our way — we’re just going to keep scoring goals. … That’s what makes soccer fun. That’s what brings people in here. They want to see the players celebrating.”Aurora’s second season in the USL W League begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Rochester (Minn.) FC at the Vikings’ TCO Stadium in ...North Creek gift shop reopening with bells on

Ron DeSantis has highlighted efforts by Republican governors and statehouses across the country to embrace proposals limiting the rights of transgender people, signing new restrictions as he moves closer to a presidential bid. Published Tue, 05 Nov 2024 13:36:20 GMT
Once reviled widely as a nuisance, the millions of miller moths migrating through cities along Colorado’s Front Range this week increasingly are seen as an ecological necessity. These native moths matter more than ever, entomologists say, because other pollinators, such as bees, are decreasing — which imperils native vegetation and potentially billions of dollars worth of agricultural food crops. The miller moths (Euxoa auxiliaris) come from Army cutworms, which turn into adult moths on the Eastern Plains before swarming into metro Denver and other urban areas. If not distracted by household and commercial light, each moth typically flies up to 100 miles, moving on into mountain foothills before July. They’re crucial food for birds, arriving just as newly-hatched chicks need protein. They become a major food source for bears foraging after emerging, hungry, from hibernation. And fuzzy moth bodies pick up and carry pollen from one flower to another, helping native plan...Hollywood homeless encampment endangers students, parents say

An encampment of homeless people that sits adjacent to a pair of schools in Hollywood has parents and city officials concerned for the students' safety.Perhaps the most problematic aspect of the encampment is that it blocks the sidewalk, forcing students from Selma Avenue Elementary School and Larchmont Charter School to walk in the street on their way to and from school.Footage from the scene shows multiple tents and multiple people, possibly students, stepping into the street to get around the encampment. In that same stretch of Selma Avenue, lines of cars wait to drop off and pick up children, forcing children to dodge traffic.School officials told KTLA they've called police multiple times about the encampment, including this week. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that an arrest was made Monday after an altercation at the camp."Since March, we've had nine homeless-related incidents in the area, within about 500 foot radius of the school," said Capt. Ben Fernandes. "Out ...Latest news
