SAN DIEGO (KSWB) - A group of what appears to be juvenile sharks were caught on video at Torrey Pines State Beach feeding on a dolphin just off the coast. Park rangers say it's a good reminder of the predators flocking to San Diego beaches, especially as we enter the summer months. Around noon on Sunday, California State Parks responded to a notification of a shark spotted around 30-40 yards from shore near lifeguard tower No. 7. Video shows multiple sharks snacking on a dolphin which washed up along the beach a few minutes later. San Diego shark expert and oceanographer Manuel Lazcano calls the incident a good sign of a healthy environment. “The shark is the top predator of the ocean, and they will eat wounded animals and very young animals and they will attack them by surprise," Lazcano said. To practice safety, State Park Peace Officers posted shark warning signs along tower No. 7 High Bridge access point to the north boundary with Del Mar city. “Your ears kind of prickle when yo...NorCal baseball regionals: How Valley Christian reliever held off Clayton Valley in game’s tightest moment

SAN JOSE — Nobody will deny that it was an extremely tense spot, even for a reliever as seasoned as Valley Christian’s Alec Belardes. But to hear coach John Diatte tell it, this wasn’t anything new for the senior.“We’ve put him in some big situations,” Diatte said. “We trust him. We believe in him. He’s been on the mound in quite a few big wins when it’s been tight.”It was certainly tight in the fifth inning Tuesday. What was a five-run lead for Valley when the frame began was down to three. There was nobody out. Clayton Valley had the bases loaded and its best hitter, Ryder Helfrick, a highly-touted pro prospect, at the plate.Belardes, an Arizona State commit who closed out Valley’s win in the Central Coast Section Division I final on Saturday, fell behind in the count, three balls, no strikes. Then he flipped the switch.Belardes struck out Helfrick and then got a double-play grounder to third to end the inning.Top-seed...National Spelling Bee: Three Bay Area students make it to Day 2

OXON HILL, Md. — Three Bay Area middle-schoolers remained in the running after the first day of competition at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.Tuesday’s rounds whittled the field from 231 contestants to 121. Among those still standing:Shradha Rachamreddy, 13, a seventh-grader at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley Upper School, in San Jose. She finished 23rd last year, when she attended Quarry Lane School, in Dublin.Vikrant Chintanaboina, 14, an eighth-grader at Discovery Charter School – Falcon Campus, in San Jose. He was 49th last year.Dhruv Subramanian, 12, a seventh-grader at Windemere Ranch Middle School, in San Ramon.Shradha and Vikrant shared the title of California state champion this year. The post-pandemic bee is leaner and, in some ways, meaner. Because of the vocabulary-definition rounds, accomplished spellers can be bounced from the bee without ever misspelling a word. And because there is no alternative path to the bee as there was in the late 2010s, the regi...Oakland: 10-year-old killed in stabbing lived in house with history of domestic violence
