Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson exits game vs. Giants with low back discomfort

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 08:27:26 GMT

A night after hitting a game-winning home run on what manager Brandon Hyde said was his “best swing of the year,” Orioles rookie infielder Gunnar Henderson exited Saturday’s game against the San Francisco Giants in the third inning with low back discomfort.Ramón Urías replaced Henderson at third base in the bottom half of the frame. Henderson struck out in the top of the second but took his position the next half inning, fielding a ground ball and throwing across to first for the out, seemingly without issue. But MASN cameras showed Henderson grimacing and reaching for his back after making the throw.Entering this season as baseball’s top prospect and a favorite for American League Rookie of the Year, Henderson, 21, started the season slowly but has heated up of late. He came into Saturday hitting .258 with an .824 OPS over his past 18 games, compared with a .170 average and .651 OPS before the stretch. Friday’s home run, a seventh-inning solo...

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Zach Whitecloud scored from long-range with just over 13 minutes left, after Adin Hill made arguably the best save of the playoffs, and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Florida Panthers 5-2 Saturday night in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final.Whitecloud’s goal put Vegas ahead, a crucial penalty kill followed and captain Mark Stone scored an insurance marker that was reviewed for a high stick and confirmed. That combination, plus Hill’s 33 saves, gave Vegas the lead in the series after a feisty opener between Sun Belt teams who wasted little time getting acquainted with big hits during play and plenty of post-whistle pushing and shoving.Original Knights players Jonathan Marchessault and Shea Theodore also scored on Florida’s two-time Vezina winner Sergei Bobrovsky. Game 2 is Monday in Las Vegas. The Panthers ratcheted up the physical play late after falling behind by two. Concert review: Brooks and Dunn delight near-capacity Xcel Energy Center crowd

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 08:27:26 GMT

Reunited country duo Brooks and Dunn headlined St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center for the first time in 13 years Saturday night. And, in a way, the evening felt like a throwback to the days of 2010.For starters, tickets were reasonably priced compared to a lot of the competition. That, and the fact the duo played most of the songs from their 2010 show. It’s not like they don’t have more to choose from, as they scored more than 40 Top 10 hits in the ’90s and ’00s, including 20 No. 1s.Then again, these guys have been doing this for decades and have clearly figured out what songs work best in a live setting. Ronnie Dunn (the one with the hair) and Kix Brooks (the one with the mustache) were struggling solo acts when a producer suggested they join forces in 1990. After nearly two decades, they decided to call it quits with a 2010 farewell tour. But after becoming struggling solo acts once again, the pair reunited in 2015 to play Vegas with Reba McEntire and have...

Gray takes first loss as Guardians top Twins

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 08:27:26 GMT

Twins starter Sonny Gray has had better days this season, but not any bad ones — his first loss of the season on Saturday night notwithstanding.Gray made one pitch he would like to have back, and it cost him and the Twins in a 4-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians before an announced crowd of 27,153 at Target Field.Gray, whose record now stands at 4-1, sailed through six innings and took a 2-1 lead to the mound in the top of the seventh.  A two-run homer by Will Brennan gave the Guardians a 3-2 lead. It was the first home run Gray has allowed this season.Gray was replaced by Jovani Moran after giving up a pair of two-out singles, and Moran got the next batter to end the inning. The Guardians added a run in the ninth on a home run by Steven Kwan.“They’ve been aggressive, and I also wanted to be aggressive on my side,” Gray said. “They got a lot of singles, a lot of knocks, and then I gave up the two-run homer in the seventh. You throw three fairly quality pitches to the previous batter,...

NorCal softball championship: Hollister denies St. Francis’ repeat bid, with help from the elements and an error

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 08:27:26 GMT

HOLLISTER – In a game where every fly ball turned into a guaranteed popup once confronted by swirling Hollister winds, it was only fitting that St. Francis’ bid for back-to-back NorCal Division I titles ended on a ground ball in the bottom of the ninth. With the game scoreless, Hollister’s Lauryn McShane hit a pitch up the middle with runners on first and second and one out in the inning. What should have been a routine force play was flubbed by the infield, the flip to second getting away from the defense and allowing runner Kyla Hignel not just to take third, but to also slide into home and score on a walk-off.The entire Hollister team converged upon their teammate to celebrate the 1-0 victory and the school’s first NorCal championship.“It feels incredible,” pitcher Sophia Mariottini said. ‘Incredible’ would also be a superb way of describing how Mariottini defanged the St. Francis hitters for the second time in a week. Hollister’s Sophia Mariottini(1) delivers a pitch ...
