University City seafood cleanup could take weeks

UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. – Some residents living near the shuttered Seafood City supermarket began noticing a pungent odor recently. They shared their concerns with University City officials. Building inspectors pinpointed the stench to the market on Olive Boulevard and discovered thousands of pounds of fish were left behind.“This is disgusting and irresponsible,” former customer Lolita Paiwonsky said.After the discovery, city officials immediately contacted the California property owner about the public health hazard. The city hired a company to begin the cleanup, which has been underway for several days.The property owner is paying for the cost of the cleanup, according to a spokesperson for University City. Some nearby residents say they not only noticed a smell but have seen an influx of insects as well. WENTZVILLE, Mo. – On Wednesday, General Motors said the Wentzville strike is impacting other assembly plants across the region, causing them to lay off 2,000 employees at a plant in Fairfax, Kansas."I do know that with us, we have a staffing part of our plant that does make parts for other plants,” Victor Dollison said. “So, I think our president does know what kind of affect that will have. CHARLES, Mo. - A regional bomb squad was called to investigate a suspicious item Wednesday afternoon at McNair Park in St. Charles.The St. Charles Police Department closed the upper portion of McNair Park as of 4 p.m. after a canister was discovered on a picnic table at the park. Authorities with the California Highway Patrol’s Organized Retail Theft Task Force on Wednesday announced the recovery of more than $200,000 worth of stolen merchandise and the arrest of 10 suspects in connection with a retail theft fencing operation. On Sept. 13, CHP partnered with LAPD’s newly formed Los Angeles Organized Retail Crime Task Force, to investigate the fencing operation, which was selling stolen retail merchandise at swap meets in the L.A. area, according to a new CHP news release. A “fence” is either a person or group of individuals that buy merchandise stolen during smash-and-grab robberies and organized retail thefts, such as “flash-mob” style crimes, and then sell those goods as a seemingly legitimate business, online or at swap meets. Investigators located the operation, which was being run out of the backyard of a private residence where the stolen merchandise was kept under tents and inside a box truck. (KRON) -- Entire villages were wiped out during the massive earthquake that shook Morocco nearly two weeks ago. A native Moroccan woman with ties to the Bay Area happened to be visiting family in the North African country when the quake hit.The woman is now raising money to help people who have lost everything rebuild their lives.
