Not all Halloween treats come in wrappers. Some come in a pumpkin

For many kids, and some die-hard adults, the runup to Halloween is cause for elation. There’s the trying on of costumes, the laying in of a generous supply of candy for trick or treaters, and, of course, the pumpkin decorating.Carving pumpkins is messy work, but there is a built-in snack reward at the end. Don’t throw out those seeds – roast them! Not only are they delicious, but making your own crunchy pumpkin seeds means you get to make sure the amount of oil and salt remains within reason, and you also get to show your kids that not all snacks come in crinkly bags; sometimes they come in a pumpkin.Don’t bypass the cleaning step. If your seeds aren’t clean and dry, they won’t crisp up properly. First, scoop out all of the guts and seeds from your pumpkin. I like to use a large metal spoon for this. Place the whole mess in a bowl. Then remove the pumpkin guts from the seeds. Some kids will find the gloppiness gross in a yucky way, but some will find it gross in an enticing way....Hurricane Otis weakens over southern Mexico after battering Acapulco

(CNN) — Researchers from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are sounding the alarm on a mental health crisis for health workers around the country.Using nationwide survey data between 2018 and 2022, a new report from the agency found that nearly half of health workers reported feeling burned out in 2022, up from under a third four years prior. Health workers’ reports of being harassed at work more than doubled, as well. The report, released on Tuesday, also shows that health workers face worse mental health outcomes than employees in other industries. The findings come on the heels of the largest health care worker strike in US history, in which 75,000 unionized employees of Kaiser Permanente cited feelings of burnout and chronic staffing shortages during a walkout in five states and the District of Columbia.“While usually health workers care diligently for others in their time of need, it is now our nation’s health workers who are suffering, and we must act,” said Dr. ...UK’s Sunak urges ‘specific pauses’ in Israel-Hamas war, stops short of ceasefire

LONDON — Rishi Sunak called for “specific pauses” in the conflict between Israel and Hamas to allow for humanitarian aid to reach Gaza, but distinguished that from broader demands for a ceasefire.Speaking at prime minister’s questions in the House of Commons Sunak Wednesday, Sunak said the U.K. wants hostages held by Hamas militants to be released “and for humanitarian aid to get in — and we recognize for all of that to happen there has to be a safer environment which of course necessitates specific pauses as distinct from a ceasefire.”Speaking later to journalists, Sunak’s official spokesperson said: “There needs to be a level of security for aid workers to enter [Gaza for] humanitarian relief to be distributed, and the best way to continue to achieve that is being discussed.”The statement from Sunak appears to align the U.K. with the United States. Speaking at the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said Israel “must take all possi...Latest news
