AUSTIN (KXAN) — A patient safety bill aimed at protecting Texans from potentially dangerous doctors, filed in response to KXAN's "Still Practicing" investigations, is one step closer to becoming law. If House Bill 1998 clears one last final vote in the full Texas Senate, it would then go to the governor's desk.In a last-minute move, the Senate Health and Human Services Committee held a previously unscheduled hearing Friday — just under the wire to meet key legislative deadlines. The hearing was announced late Thursday evening.HB 1998 was the first bill heard and the committee unanimously voted in favor of it. A 42-year-old man charged Friday with arson at a mosque in St. Paul this week was already on probation for another fire.Police arrested Said Murekezi, also known by the last name Ntamugabumwe, on Wednesday night. The fire at Tawhid Islamic Center of Minnesota at Dale Street and University Avenue occurred Wednesday morning.No one was injured in the fire. The mosque was under construction as it was being remodeled.Said Murekezi. A hit-and-run driver struck and critically injured a 40-year-old man who was on a downtown St. Paul freeway Thursday night.Investigators believed they’d found the vehicle and driver as of Friday morning, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.Jeffrey Allen Welage Jr., of Mounds View, was on Interstate 94 near Jackson Street when the vehicle struck him at 10:53 p.m. Thursday. He was on foot at the time and the circumstances are under investigation, the State Patrol said. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A suspect wanted for attempted murder in Dudley, North Carolina, was taken into custody in Schenectady on May 18. Law enforcement agencies believe Danielle Morrisey to be responsible for a shooting incident in Dudley on April 16, during which a female suffered multiple gunshot wounds. An arrest warrant was issued for attempted murder in the first degree and possession of a firearm by a felon. Investigations by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina and the U.S. Marshals determined that Morrisey fled the state and was hiding in the Capital Region in New York. Investigators found a residence of interest, conducted surveillance operations, and confirmed Morrisey was living there. SAUGERTIES, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A woman in Saugerties has been charged for exposing herself at a McDonald's, according to police. Cheryl Johnsen, 49, of Westbury, was arrested on May 18. At 4:49 p.m. on May 18, Saugerties Police responded to a call at the 350 Route 212 McDonald's location for a report of a female that was exposing herself in the parking lot. An investigation determined that Johnsen had laid on the sidewalk next to the restaurant, pulled her pants and underwear off, and allegedly began to repeatedly raise her legs above her head, before deciding to run around a vehicle in the parking lot. Police say Johnsen then got into her SUV and popped out of the sunroof, with her breasts exposed. All the while, her actions were being recorded and live streamed by a friend of Johnsen who was present. ST. LOUIS - Three days after Kim Gardner abruptly resigned as the St. Louis Circuit Attorney, her replacement has been decided. Gabriel "Gabe" Gore has been named the next St. Louis Circuit Attorney. Gore will finish out the rest of Gardner's term through January 2025. Gabe GoreGore has served as a member of the Dowd Bennet law firm since 2010 and is described as an "experienced trial lawyer who concentrates on complex civil litigation and white collar defense," according to the law firm's website. He brings more than 23 years of experience in private law practice. ST. LOUIS -- People are moving away from the St. Louis region, according to new estimates by the US Census Bureau. In St. Louis County, population declined in all but six municipalities, including Florissant, Chesterfield, University City, and Ballwin. Population dropped nearly five percent in the city of Saint Louis.Population also dropped in the Metro East, most notably in St. Clair County where 16 out of 17 municipalities recorded a loss.
