Experts: Israel’s campaign in Gaza is most destructive in history

By Julia Frankel | Associated PressJERUSALEM — The Israeli military campaign in Gaza, experts say, now sits among the deadliest and most destructive in history. In just over two months, the offensive has wreaked more destruction than the razing of Syria’s Aleppo between 2012 and 2016, Ukraine’s Mariupol or, proportionally, the Allied bombing of Germany in World War II. It has killed more civilians than the U.S.-led coalition did in its three-year campaign against the Islamic State group. The Israeli military has said little about what kinds of bombs and artillery it is using in Gaza. But from blast fragments found on-site and analyses of strike footage, experts are confident that the vast majority of bombs dropped on the besieged enclave are U.S.-made. They say the weapons include 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) “bunker-busters” that have killed hundreds in densely populated areas. With the Palestinian death toll in Gaza approaching 20,000, the international communit...Sale closed in Monte Sereno: $2.5 million for a three-bedroom home

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball is widening the runner’s lane approaching first base to include a portion of fair territory, changing a more than century-old rule that caused World Series controversy over interference calls.MLB also is shortening the pitch clock with runners on base by two seconds to 18 and further reducing mound visits in an effort to speed games.Another change adopted Thursday by the sport’s 11-man competition committee requires a pitcher who warms up on the mound before a half inning to face at least one batter. The new runner’s lane overrides a rule that has existed since the National League mandated in 1882 that runners must be within the 3-foot box on the foul side of the base line during the final 45 feet between home and first. Violators were subject to being called out for interfering with fielders taking a throw. The rule was designed to prevent collisions; foul lines intersected the middle of bases until the bags were moved entirel...Patriots’ stout run defense might force Broncos’ Wilson to air it out even with snow in the forecast

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expects an entirely new challenge for his dominant team to bring home a fifth title of 2023 in the Club World Cup final on Friday.“The way they play, we’ve never faced, never,” Guardiola said Thursday of South American champion Fluminense.Fluminense’s style designed by coach Fernando Diniz is to crowd small areas of the field with several players linking together in series of passes. The Brazilian team’s overloading of one side of the field is a stark contrast to the finely calibrated movement of a Guardiola team.“We will have to impose our rhythm and our positional game as best as possible,” Guardiola said. “They will demand a lot of effort, and (we must) try to be aware and precise with the ball.”A 13th Europe vs South America final is the 19th and last edition of this format of the Club World Cup. It is relaunching in June 2025 as a 32-team, month-long tournament with 12 European teams and six from South Ameri...Latest news
