One UK newspaper praised the newly released family portrait for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s annual Christmas card, saying it presents a “modern,” relatable image of the British monarchy, with the couple and their three children dressed casually in jeans and white, button-down shirts.Taken by a photographer best known for his work with celebrities and fashion magazines, the Telegraph said the “striking,” black-and-white image of the Waleses also shows the three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, “looking suddenly more mature, gazing directly at the camera.” The Wales represent the monarchy’s “future,” the Telegraph said.In this undated handout provided by Kensington Palace, and taken by the photographer Josh Shinner earlier this year in Windsor, Prince William, Prince of Wales and Catherine, Princess of Wales pose with their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. SANTA CLARA — The Seahawks with backup quarterback Drew Lock never presented a championship-caliber challenge to the 49ers, but San Francisco still overcame a serious test on Sunday in Levi’s Stadium.Despite several injuries, the 49ers’ elite defense remained stout. The 49ers lost top cornerback Charvarius Ward (groin) on the first series of the game. Pro Bowl tackle Javon Hargrave also didn’t return after suffering what the 49ers hope is just a pulled hamstring. Linebackers Dre Greenlaw and Oren Burks also missed some time. San Francisco was already without Talanoa Hufanga — out for the season with a torn ACL — and Arik Armstead. But defensive coordinator Steve Wilks’ unit held tough, limiting the Seahawks to 16 points — about a touchdown below their season average. In San Francisco’s fifth straight win, a 28-16 cruise past Seattle, the 49ers’ (10-3) defensive depth was on display. The group turned Seattle (6-7) over twice, frustrated star receiver DK Metcalf to the point...California teacher arrested, accused of public intoxication at school

But if he'd seen the fantasyland of selections at The Breakfast Club at Midtown San Jose, it is likely he would have made an exception. While the menu is broken down into traditional breakfast and brunch such as pancakes, omelets, salads and sandwiches, the individual dishes show a range of influences and creativity. There are Greek salads side by side with Korean chicken fried rice. Bacon, pecan and coconut waffles can be paired with vodka-enhanced sweet spiced pear mimosas that arrive from the well-stocked bar."We're not just any breakfast diner," server Veronica Cuebas told San Jose Spotlight. BERLIN (AP) — Union Berlin has never won a Champions League game. Now it needs to beat 14-time European champion Real Madrid on Tuesday to have any hope of extending its participation in European competition this season.A win over Madrid — which is already assured of topping Group C — coupled with a loss for Braga at Napoli in the other group game would lift Union above the Portuguese side into third place in the group and secure and the consolation prize of a place in the Europa League. There’s no consolation for finishing bottom of the group, where Union finds itself with just two points after failing to beat 10-man Braga in their previous game. That 1-1 draw in new Union coach Nenad Bjelica’s debut stretched the German team’s winless streak to 16 games across all competitions, but Union finally ended that confidence-shattering run on Saturday in the Bundesliga with a 3-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach.Madrid, meanwhile, has won every game in the competition so far and is loo...Critics pan draft text at UN climate talks as watered down as COP28 nears its finale in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Countries moved closer to reaching what critics called a watered-down final deal Monday, avoiding calls from more than 100 nations to phase out planet-warming fossil fuels as United Nations climate talks in Dubai neared their culmination.A new draft released Monday afternoon on what’s known as the global stocktake — the part of talks that assesses where the world is at with its climate goals and how it can reach them — called for countries to reduce “consumption and production of fossil fuels, in a just, orderly and equitable manner.”The release triggered a frenzy of fine-tuning by government envoys and gimlet-eye analysis by advocacy groups, just hours before the planned late morning finish to the talks on Tuesday — even though many observers expect the finale to run over time, as is common at the annual U.N. talks.Small island nations, some of the most vulnerable places in a world of rising temperatures and seas, blasted the draft and...German soccer league approves plan to sell share of TV rights to investor despite fan protests

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — German soccer clubs voted Monday to approve a plan to sell a share of its broadcast revenues to an outside investor, a plan which is bitterly opposed by many fans. The so-called “strategic marketing partnership” would involve selling a share of revenues — German media reports have estimated around 8% over 20 years — to an investment firm. German fans are strongly opposed to any outside commercial influence on the league and have been protesting with banners at Bundesliga games for months. The league’s co-chief executive Marc Lenz said that 24 of the 36 teams in the men’s first and second divisions voted for the plan, with 10 against and two abstaining. That meant it only just reached the needed two-thirds majority of clubs. Even so, Lenz said it was “a very good basis for us to be able to act.”Lenz said the league will now start detailed talks with possible partners and would aim for a decision by the end of March.League officials argued the deal ...Biden is hosting a Hanukkah ceremony at the White House as fears mount about rising antisemitism

(Courtesy Gallaudet University Archives)D.C.’s Gallaudet University for deaf and hard-of-hearing students is stepping up a multimillion-dollar campaign to right some of the historical wrongs against its Black students. In the early 1950s, Louise Miller’s four deaf children were barred from attending the Kendall School for the Deaf, D.C.’s only elementary school for deaf students, located on Gallaudet University’s campus. The reason? Deep-seated racial segregation. In 1952, Miller and several other families of deaf children joined forces and sued the District’s school board — and won.Their victory opened the door to the landmark Brown v.
